A New Campaign
Introduction
We are meeting on Saturday, April 26th 2025 to begin the work on developing a new campaign for us to play. Most of us are ready for some consistant and persistant gameplay.
A think it is fair to say that we will be playing in the Genesys system, but there is not much else determined at this time. Saturday will be a very long conversation about what we all want from the next several months.
Questions
1. What Genre do we want to play?
This will start the conversation and will factor into every other decision we make. What major concepts and themes do we want to explore? Do we want futuristic tech, fantastic magic and beasts...some blending of both? Do we want horror, where our characters cannot possible survive, but perhaps they do?
Here we want to do 2 things: Pick a Genre, and describe three tropes or themes and the percentage of them we want in place for example:
Science Fiction
- Future Tech(Far-Future) 60% (emphasis on digital lives, and hacking)
- Space Travel 35% (I want to see at least two different planets, have a space battle, and see some space stations, but a ton of space-exploration isnt necessary)
- Aliens/Synthetic Lifeforms 25% (I'd like there to be atleast 2 other-than-human lifeforms
2.What Setting do we want to play?
I think this question will be the one that takes us the longest, because the "Setting" matters so much, and it is likely that we will actually build the setting together, and bespoke. This is not required, if we want to play "star wars" or "Game of Thrones" then thats totally fine. We should try to be granular here. Give as much detail as required. ie "Star Wars, but during a time where Jedi were peak, and the force is a common and known factor. an Age of "Sci-Fi" Sorcery" or "Fantasy, but Set in Egypt where Gods and Beasts walked among humans and Magic was a factor of everyday life by the Nile"
3. What Kind of story do we want to tell?
This one will require more specificity, but may not take as long as the others. Here we are talking about what our characters are/will be.
To give some examples of how the Story we want to tell can be adopted to any setting, I will give examples using the Fantasy Genre, Egypt Setting mentioned above
- A Regency Game would see our characters embroiled in the Politics surrounding members of Pharoah's Court. Our characters would be Guardsman, priests and priestesses, Magi, and Whatever the Egyption Aristocracy called themselves. It would be a game of Charisma, Cunning, betrayal, and Loyalty.
- A Mercenary Game would be kind of a classic adventurers tale. One of a band of misfits taking on quests, killing monsters, putting down cultists, etc for coin
- A Hero's Tale Story would mean one of you, or a DMPC taking on a "Chosen One" role, with a destiny they are trying to meet or avoid, and the rest are the characters in that Hero's group
- A Heist Game ...etc
And Onward
From here we would get into the idea of creating characters. Maybe not stats-wise just yet, but talking about WHO we want to be, and their relationships with the other players. We can talk about the character's story, and where we want them to go.
